São Vicente Island

Bathed by the historic Bay of Porto Grande and guarded by Mount Cara, São Vicente has something to offer everyone.

Mindelo, the capital, invites you to stroll through its historic streets, have a pleasant lunch overlooking Porto Grande Bay, enjoy romantic sunsets on the iconic Monte de Cara, enjoy live music in its bars and restaurants, enjoy theater nights at the Cultural Center, and party until the sun comes up.

This island has a particularly light and inviting atmosphere. Its people, even though beaten down by the aridity of the island, retain a sense of humor and relaxation typical of the San Vicentines. Morabeza at its best!

There are several must-sees. Rua de Lisboa, where you'll find the historic Palácio do Povo (now the Museu do Mar) and the classic Mercado Municipal. Rua da Praia, with its Belém Tower, is particularly full of life. Here the smell of the sea mixes with the aroma of fresh coriander from the street vendors, enveloping the locals who wander from one end to the other.

São Vicente is the birthplace of artists such as the late Cesária Évora, Bana, Luis Morais and Tito Paris, among many others. And not for nothing, Mindelo is referred to as the cultural capital of the archipelago.

In the eagerly awaited month of February Mindelo is invaded by the joy and spontaneity of the famous Mindelense Carnival. In August, the island hosts the Baía das Gatas international music festival, where great local and international musicians meet an electric audience! In September, Mindelo becomes the stage for the Mindelact international theater festival, with artists from Africa, Europe and South America meeting and exchanging experiences in the performing arts.

The island also offers excursions into the surrounding bare mountains, hot baths on beautiful white sand beaches, diving with turtles in crystal-clear waters, and much more. Feel invited, feel at home.
