Smoking is also one of the main risk factors for chronic non-communicable diseases in Cape Verde. These facts have contributed to the recent updating of Cape Verde's tobacco laws.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h3>\u00a0<\/h3><h3>Rules for tobacco use in Cape Verde (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ccad.cv\/site\/index.php\/publicacao\/category\/5-bo-drogas\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Law no. 8\/X\/2022<\/a>)<\/h3><p>Tobacco use in Cape Verde is legal. However, some rules must be respected, especially regarding the places where smoking is prohibited.<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"background-color: transparent; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align);\"><strong>1.<\/strong> \u00c9 <\/span><b style=\"background-color: transparent; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; text-align: var(--text-align);\">the use of tobacco products and devices prohibited\u00a0<span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; text-align: var(--text-align); font-size: 1rem;\">electronic devices in all enclosed or semi-enclosed spaces\u00a0<\/span>and on public transport<\/b><span style=\"background-color: transparent; font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align); font-size: 1rem;\">public administration services and bodies\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align); font-size: 1rem;\">and public legal persons;<\/span><\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">b) In establishments where\u00a0<span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align); font-size: 1rem;\">health care, particularly hospitals,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align); font-size: 1rem;\">health regions, clinics, centers, posts\u00a0<\/span>and health police stations, doctors' surgeries, <span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align); font-size: 1rem;\">clinical laboratories, pharmacies and the like;<\/span><\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">c) In places intended for children under eighteen, <span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align); font-size: 1rem;\">namely nurseries and kindergartens, homes\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align); font-size: 1rem;\">children's and youth centers, <\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align); font-size: 1rem;\">leisure activities, colonies and camps\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align); font-size: 1rem;\">the age of the students and their level of education,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align); font-size: 1rem;\">and vocational training centers;<\/span><\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">f) In museums, cultural centers, archives\u00a0<span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align); font-size: 1rem;\">of condominiums;<\/span><\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">t) In the enclosures of automatic surveying networks\u00a0<span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align); font-size: 1rem;\">of money;<\/span><\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; text-align: var(--text-align); font-size: 1rem;\">2.<\/strong><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align); font-size: 1rem;\"> With the exception of (a), (b), (c), (e), (j), (p), (r), (s), (t), (u) and (v), spaces reserved for smokers may be created and duly marked.<\/span><\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>3.<\/strong> Access to the spaces referred to in the previous paragraph is for people over 18.\u00a0<span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align); font-size: 1rem;\">(&#8230;)<\/span><\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>5.<\/strong> Smoking is prohibited within (3m) three meters of enclosed public and private spaces, as well as around the perimeter of semi-enclosed public and private spaces.<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>6.<\/strong> Smoking is prohibited in private vehicles carrying children under the age of eighteen.\u00a0<span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align); font-size: 1rem;\">(&#8230;)<\/span><\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>8.<\/strong> O <b>The provisions of the preceding paragraphs shall apply to the use of electronic devices<\/b>The use of nicotine, with or without nicotine, the use of water pipes or hookahs, herbal smoking products, as well as the use of new smokeless tobacco products that produce aerosols, vapors, gases or inhalable particles.<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>9.<\/strong> \u00c9 <b>no smoking in Nature Parks<\/b>.<\/p><p>The <b>The penalty for violating the ban on smoking in designated places in Cape Verde is 3,000 escudos.<\/b>\u00a0(approximately 30 euros) <b>to 5,000 escudos <\/b>(approximately 50 euros).<\/p><h3>\u00a0<\/h3><h3>Electronic cigarettes\u00a0<\/h3><div><p>Regarding electronic cigarettes in Cape Verde, the new smoking law (in Chapter II, Article 3, paragraph 11) states the following:<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"background-color: transparent; font-size: 1rem; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align);\">advertising and the supply of electronic devices\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"background-color: transparent; font-size: 1rem; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align);\">throughout the country.<\/span><\/p><\/div><h3>\u00a0<\/h3><h3>Smoking statistics in Cape Verde<\/h3><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align); font-size: 1rem;\">Recent statistics on smoking in the country (<\/span><a style=\"font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align); background-color: #ffffff; font-size: 1rem;\" href=\"https:\/\/observatoriotabaco.cv\/dados-de-tabagismo\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">II National Survey on Risk Factors for Non-Communicable Diseases<\/a><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align); font-size: 1rem;\">In Cape Verde, the prevalence of tobacco use among current adult tobacco users is 12.5%. This prevalence is higher in men (18.3%) than in women (6.5%). <\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align); font-size: 1rem;\">The age group with the highest prevalence of tobacco use is 60 to 69 years old, in both men (22.8%) and women (20.3%).<\/span><\/li><li>The prevalence of tobacco use among current users increases with age from 30 onwards,<br \/>in both the men's and women's groups.<\/li><li>Nationally, the prevalence of tobacco use among daily users is 7.1%.  In men, this prevalence is higher (10.3%) than in women (3.8%).<\/li><li>The prevalence of smoking among daily users clearly seems to increase with age in both sexes, peaking in the 60-69 age group among both men (19.9%) and women (16.7%).<\/li><li>In Cape Verde, 4.9% of the adult population smokes daily, 8.4% in men and 1.3% in women (Graph 2.2-4). In the 60 to 69 age group there is a higher prevalence of daily smokers, approximately 7.3%, with this prevalence being 12.3% in men and 3.6% in women.<\/li><li>The prevalence of current smokers who do not smoke daily is 4.7%, which is higher in men (7.3%) than in women (1.9%).<\/li><li>The average age of smoking among daily smokers is 18.9 years. For men the average age is 19.0 years and for women 18.4 years.\u00a0<\/li><li>The average duration of smoking among current smokers is 21.6 years, 20.6 for men and 28.1 for women.<\/li><li>The average duration of smoking seems to increase with age, with 7.7 years among smokers aged between 18 and 29 and 46.5 years among those aged between 60 and 69.<\/li><li>In Cape Verde, the percentage of the population exposed to smoke at home in the last 30 days is 13.8%.<\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); text-align: var(--text-align); font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h3>Conclusion<\/h3><p>In summary, Cape Verde's tobacco laws prohibit smoking in enclosed public places, workplaces and on public transport. In addition, it is forbidden to sell and supply tobacco to minors, as well as to advertise tobacco.
