São Nicolau Island

São Nicolau is an island of eccentric beauty, offering incredible opportunities to (re)connect with nature. From its fertile, enveloping valleys to the seductive beaches that supply natural pools, São Nicolau is a moving destination. The island boasts two of the seven wonders of Cape Verde, Monte Gordo and Carbeirinho.

The Monte Gordo Natural Park, one of the island's biggest attractions, stretches between the municipalities of Tarrafal and Ribeira Brava. This "mountain massif" encompasses a vast natural wealth including several endemic species, such as the ancient dragon tree. Monte Gordo, like other parts of the island of São Nicolau, offers nature lovers unforgettable walks along its idyllic trails.

São Nicolau has a variety of white sand and black sand beaches. The Juncalinho and Carbeirinho beaches combine colossal rocks that hug the cerulean ocean to form natural pools that would make anyone jump in head first.

Its main economic activities, agriculture and fishing, make it possible to enjoy a pleasant gastronomy made up of seasonal vegetables and fresh fish. Here you can enjoy the famous "Modje", the good tuna produced by Sucla, the much sought-after São Nicolau cookies, a fried moray eel with a glass of the famous "grogue", or "cuscuz" made with the island's typical manioc flour.

Its people are welcoming and humble. They like to get involved in the Mazurca and Contradança rhythms that are peculiar to the island. São Nicolau is also an island pioneer of morna, with the village of Praia Branca being the home of the famous musician and composer Paulino Vieira. Here you can also visit the Casa da Morna Sodade, a museum dedicated to Morna and its greatest name - Cesária Évora, the barefoot diva.

São Nicolau is an island to be experienced calmly!
