Volcano of Fire - Isla del Fuego

With an altitude of 2929 meters, Pico do Fogo is the highest point in Cape Verde and one of the country's best-known images.

This emblematic monument is surrounded by a dramatic landscape of dark rivers of lava from past eruptions.

The last eruption of Pico do Fogo took place in 2014, and its marks are still very much present in Chã das Caldeiras, a picturesque community that hasn't abandoned what gives them life, the volcano itself.

From the summit of this colossus you can see the town of Chã das Caldeiras, the Serra da Bordeira and, on clear days, the neighboring islands. The air smells faintly of sulphur, which is mixed with other gases released by the volcano.

For those who can't do without a good adventure, climbing to the top of Pico do Fogo is essential.

Best of all, the adventure doesn't end when you reach the top of the volcano. On the contrary, that's just the beginning! One of the ways down is to let yourself slide down the "jorra" (dry lava flows) in a frantic and exciting descent, which is definitely not for the faint-hearted.

The Fogo volcano was chosen as one of the 7 Wonders of Cape Verde in the category "Natural volcanic landforms, which include localized relief forms such as volcanic cones, veins and pythons, chimneys, geological cuts, volcanic tunnels and other geoforms of remarkable scenic beauty."
