Old Town: Explore Cape Verde's historical gem

Cradle of Cape Verde

Cidade Velha, also known as Ribeira Grande de Santiago, is a small town located on the island of Santiago in Cape Verde, about 15 kilometers from the capital, Praia.

It is considered the oldest settlement in the country, having been founded in 1462 by Portuguese explorers. In fact, Cidade Velha was the first European settlement in the tropics.

Testament to history

The city's history is closely linked to transatlantic slavery, as it was once an important port for the export of African slaves.

The Pelourinho, a large stone pillar built in the city's main square, is a symbol of the brutal history of transatlantic slavery and its role in the development of Cidade Velha. It was used to publicly read the acts of the Municipality, as a place to trade slaves and produce from the land, and above all to repress infractions by rebellious slaves.

Early settlement in Cidade Velha was also made possible by the availability of fertile soil and water. As the community developed and grew, various structures were built to serve military, religious and civilian purposes, concentrated in a compact urban area that to this day preserves much of its original structure.

Marks of colonial heritage

Many of the city's buildings, including the Fort of São Filipe, were built with forced labor.

The fort was built to protect the port from pirate attacks and is one of the city's most notable landmarks. It was strategically built on one of the highest points in the Old Town, overlooking the city and the Atlantic Ocean.

Its privileged location offers breathtaking 360º views of the surroundings and incredible sunsets.

Cidade Velha is also home to several churches that reflect the city's heritage. The most famous of these is the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, a beautiful structure dating back to the early 15th century (built around 1495).

UNESCO World Heritage Site

Since 2009, Cidade Velha has been UNESCO World Heritage Site, in recognition of its historical and cultural importance.
