Boavista: the fantastic island

Boa Vista (or Boavista) is the ideal mix of ingredients for a perfect break. Mile-long beaches, where the sea in multiple shades of blue breaks over the long white sand, invite you to take a long swim. Santa Mónica (considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the country), Praia de Chaves, Praia Diante and Varandinha are just some of the island's spectacular beaches.

Boa Vista's waters are home to the highest concentration of marine species in Cape Verde, providing ideal conditions for snorkeling and diving. The constant wind on some beaches, such as Ponta Antónia, is ideal for kitesurfing and windsurfing. Boa Vista is also one of the main ports for sea turtles in the archipelago. Its beaches are home to more than half of the nesting turtles, a phenomenon that can be observed at certain times of the year under the guidance of certified guides.

Entering the island, desert landscapes of endless fine sand dunes and huge arid red plains stretch beyond the reach of the eyes.

But anyone who thinks that Boa Vista is all sun, sea and dunes is mistaken. In the small villages to the north, with their wide, quiet streets flanked by small houses in a variety of colors, the tranquility and authenticity of old Boa Vista are still present. João Galego, Tarafes and Fundo de Figueiras are some of the must-sees for those who want to go beyond the ordinary.

This "fantastic island" is also rich in history and culture. The coastline displays the ruins of stranded ships, offering a window into the history of shipwrecks, piracy and merchants. Music (especially the morna), pottery and weaving are some of the many cultural aspects that can be enjoyed on the island. The local gastronomy, with an emphasis on dishes based on fresh fish and seafood, can be enjoyed in some restaurants that still retain the cozy spice of home cooking.

The perfect evening in Boa Vista is overlooking the beach, enjoying a local cheese and a cold drink, to the sound of a soft morna while the fiery sun hides in the sea.

All this awaits you. Come and experience Boa Vista!
